2008 test — 100 questions. The officer asks up to 10; you pass with 6 correct. Applies if you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025.
2025 test — 128 questions. The officer asks 20; you pass with 12 correct. Applies if you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025.
On first launch CivicsPass asks when you filed and picks the matching test. You can change it any time in Settings › Your test. Every count in the app (study pool, mock interview length, pass threshold) follows that choice. If you are unsure of your filing date, check your USCIS receipt notice (Form I-797C) or your USCIS online account.
If you are 65 or older and have lived in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for 20 or more years, you may study only the 20 questions marked with an asterisk in whichever test applies to you. The officer asks 10 of those 20 and you pass with 6. You may also take the test in the language of your choice. Turn on "I'm 65+ with 20+ years as a permanent resident" in Settings and the app limits everything to the starred set.
Questions about the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice, the President's party, the number of Supreme Court justices, and your state's governor, senators and capital have answers that change. USCIS expects the answer that is correct on the day of your interview. CivicsPass marks these questions with a badge, loads the current values from a small file we update (with an offline copy in the app), and shows the "as of" date. Always double-check at uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates and your state's official website before your interview.
For "Name your U.S. representative", the answer depends on your congressional district; use house.gov.
Many questions accept several answers; the app shows all of them from the USCIS list. Some questions ask for two or three items (for example "Name two national U.S. holidays") — give as many as the question asks for.
The app reads each question aloud in a neutral U.S.-English voice, like an officer would. Answer in your head or out loud, tap "Show the answer", then tap "I got it" or "I missed it" honestly. The result is scored against the real threshold for your test (6 of 10 or 12 of 20; 6 of 10 for 65/20). Missed questions go to Weak spots. The app does not use the microphone or speech recognition. The voice plays even when the silent switch is on; make sure the media volume is up.
At the interview you read one sentence aloud and write one dictated sentence (up to three tries each). CivicsPass Pro practises both with sentences built only from the official USCIS reading and writing vocabulary lists. The writing check is lenient: capitalisation and punctuation are ignored and small spelling slips are tolerated, similar to how officers judge meaning rather than perfect spelling. Speaking is evaluated by the officer during the interview itself; the app does not record you.
It is coverage (how much of your study pool you have seen) multiplied by accuracy (your last result per question, blended with your last five mock interviews). It is based on your practice and is not a guarantee or prediction.

For the 2008 test the Spanish text is USCIS's own official Spanish study version. For the 2025 test the translations are our own careful study aid. The naturalization interview is conducted in English (except for applicants who qualify for a language exemption); use the Spanish text to understand, then practise the English answers.
Set your interview date on the home screen or in Settings. The app shows a countdown and, if you allow notifications, reminds you 7 days and 1 day before to re-check the answers that change. Notifications are local; nothing is sent to a server.
